I meant to take a short nap tonight around 5 but awoke at 8:30 after a long, dream-filled, and disturbing sleep. (I blame reading so much of Alan Moore’s Promethea in one sitting; now I keep dreaming about flying through the Qabbalistic Tree of Life and other strange things.) I awake, feeling disoriented like I usually do after having strong dreams, and walk towards the bathroom. BOOM. I hit my head on the closed bathroom door. I never close my bathroom door from the outside, and it doesn’t close on its own. I was more stunned at the door being closed than I was at hitting my head. Did I sleepwalk and close it? About 6 months ago I awoke to the light and vent running above my stove. Did I sleepwalk then, too? If so, what else do I do when I’m not awake? And why don’t I ever hurt myself?: my apartment is small and the floor is covered with the guts of my suitcase; it’s incredibly easy to trip even while awake, let alone asleep. Could I seriously hurt myself, even accidentally maim or kill myself, while I’m sleepwalking around my apartment? I’m getting too old to keep sleeping alone.

It’s good to dream of the Tree of Life. Do you ever land on any of the Sephiroth? Have you ever read Halevi’s work?
You might be sleepwalking. It’d be a smart move to get your stuff off the floor just in case.
I’ve never dreamed of the Tree of Life before today. For the past few days I’ve been reading every issue of a comic book that involves a journey up the tree, and now it’s gotten into my dreams. This morning right before I awoke I had a dream that I opened a door to “the ether” while on Malkuth and my mother flew in, terrified. The last thing I heard before I woke was my mother screaming for help as the door closed around her. Scary stuff. This dream was a weird, extended sequence of nothing but occult imagery, especially the ToL. I didn’t land anywhere, I just sort of flew around the tree in abstract.
I haven’t read Halevi’s work. I’ll look into it. I’m not particularly sold on the ToL, but I find it interesting from an aesthetic and philosophical perspective, and I enjoyed how it was treated in this comic series. But I don’t know much about it from a scholarly or “serious” position.
That’s interesting – maybe the comic being visual helps open up the way for you. If so, it’s good to know that it’s a tool that works for you. Do you feel that your mother is too cemented in reality and life and not spiritual? Or do you think something outside of yourself was making that statement?
That’s really why I began reading Halevi – basic curiosity and the desire to stretch my philosophical perspective. Then he made the subject enjoyable because his writing is very sober and well thought out. I’m not a Kabbalist, but I enjoy using it as a mental tool. Kind of like trying to see things from an economic perspective vs. only seeing it from a societal or political perspective. It gives you some range.
Also, about seeing Jesus as a woman – very nice. It reminds me of the end of The Gospel of Thomas where the disciples are arguing and saying that women are worthless basically. Jesus says that any woman who makes herself a man is worthy. But then you’ve studied up on Gnosis and probably already know that :)
I don’t think there was any deeper meaning to it, but maybe I’m wrong. My mother is, however, a very practical-minded woman, and exactly the kind of person that would panic at being exposed to another world.
Yeah the image of the female Jesus reminded me of the GoT, as well!
Thanks for answering the personal question about your mom. Nice to hear someone else reads the same kind of stuff I do!
